What is Cannabis?

Cannabis, also known as marijuana or ganja, is a flowering plant which has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal, recreational, spiritual, and industrial value. The flowers of the female cannabis plant can be smoked, prepared in food, or made into other extractions like hash, hash-oil, and tinctures. The stalks of the plant are made of strong fibers known as hemp. Hemp has hundreds if not thousands of industrial uses from making paper to health and beauty products. Cooking with cannabis is a fun and healthy thing to do.

Why Cook with Cannabis?

Besides the obvious health benefits of cooking marijuana as opposed to smoking it, marijuana is used in food for many reasons. The high of smoked cannabis generally only lasts up to two and a half hours, whereas marijuana prepared in food can last up to five hours or more. Can cannabis be prepared in any food?

If cannabis is to be used efficiently in foods it must be extracted into a butter, ghee, oil, or other fatty substance. So cannabis could be used in any foods or recipes that call for butter, ghee, or oil. Not all food will pair well with cannabis though, but with a little experimentation you will decide for yourself what foods you like to eat with cannabis. Be it pot brownies or a delicious pot pizza made with tasty cannabis cooking oil.

What does cannabis taste like?

Depending on the type (strain) of marijuana and other factors such as how it was grown, marijuana can vary in flavor. It can be earthly like mushrooms, fruity, sour, sweet, nutty, and more. Experiment with different types of weed in different recipes to experience the wide range of flavors that are possible with marijuana.

What are hemp-seeds and what are they used for?

Cannabutter is an extraction of cannabinoids (the psychoactive oils found in cannabis) into butter. When your cooking with cannabis this butter may then be used in recipes that call for butter, or used like traditional butter on toast, pancakes, and more.

What is ghee and cannabis ghee?

Ghee is a type of (delicious!) clarified butter commonly used in Middle-Eastern countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and Egypt. Much like cannabutter, cannabis ghee is made by combining marijuana and unsalted butter over heat. Because it is clarified, Ghee can be stored for extended periods of time without refrigeration as long as it is sealed in an air-tight container to prevent oxidation.
